Applications and implications of phylogeography for canid conservation Mastozool. neotrop.
Martinez,Pablo A; Zurano,Juan P; Molina,Wagner F; Bidau,Claudio J.
Phylogeographic studies are currently used to infer historical demographic processes such as gene fow, determination of effective population sizes, colonisation dynamics, and population botlenecks, as well as for the determination of species boundaries and the identification of possible conservation units. We present a review of the main contributions of this approach, and its applications and implications for canid conservation. Studies performed in canids have shown that the number of named subspecies is often larger than that of phylogeographic units. In recent times, the fragmentation of habitats has increased and one of the major concerns of conservation biologists is the occurrence of inbreeding. Large-sized canids have demonstrated to have enough...

Bats (Mammalia, Chiroptera) from the Nísia Floresta National Forest, with new records for the state of Rio Grande do Norte, northeastern Brazil Biota Neotropica
Barros,Marília A. S.; Morais,Camila Martins Gomes; Figueiredo,Bruna Maria Braga; Moura Júnior,Gilberto Benigno de; Ribeiro,François Fernandes dos Santos; Pessoa,Daniel Marques Almeida; Ito,Fernanda; Bernard,Enrico.
Abstract The state of Rio Grande do Norte is considered a data gap for bat species records in Brazil. The state is also currently target of large economic projects with potential impacts on bats, especially wind farms and mining enterprises. In addition, Rio Grande do Norte has few conservation units in which there is no systematic study on bat fauna. The Nísia Floresta National Forest (NFNF), a federally protected area of 174 hectares, is located in the eastern coast of Rio Grande do Norte and corresponds to one of the last remnants of Atlantic Forest in the state, in its northernmost limits. A bat inventory was conducted in NFNF using mist nets set at ground level, from sunset to sunrise, from December 2011 to December 2012, totaling 25 sampling nights....

Birds of two protected areas in the southern range of the Brazilian Araucaria forest Pap. Avulsos de Zool. (São Paulo)
Franz,Ismael; Barros,Marcelo Pereira de; Cappelatti,Laura; Dala-Corte,Renato Bolson; Ott,Paulo Henrique.
Over 70% of threatened birds in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, south Brazil, inhabit forest environments. The creation and maintenance of protected areas is one of the most important measures aiming to mitigate these problems. However, the knowledge of the local biodiversity is essential so that these areas can effectively preserve the natural resources. Between 2004 and 2009 we sampled the avifauna in two conservation units in Rio Grande do Sul: Floresta Nacional de Canela (FNC) and Parque Natural Municipal da Ronda (PMR), both representative of the Mixed Humid Forest (Araucaria Forest). A total of 224 species was recorded, 116 at FNC and 201 at PMR, ten of which threatened regionally: Pseudastur polionotus, Odontophorus capueira, Patagioenas...

Diversity of bryophytes in priority areas for conservation in the Atlantic forest of northeast Brazil Acta Botanica
Silva,Mércia Patrícia Pereira; Pôrto,Kátia Cavalcanti.
The northeastern Brazilian Atlantic forest is the region with the greatest diversity of bryophytes in the country. However, knowledge about bryophytes is irregularly distributed among Brazilian regions. Therefore, we aimed to contribute to knowledge about bryophytes on a regional scale in the northeastern Atlantic forest, to identify the centers of bryophyte diversity in that region, and to reiterate the importance and identify locations for which new protected areas should be created. We built a database of bryophytes in 23 locations of the region, based on a literature review and new floristic inventories. To identify the locations of greatest relevance to bryophyte conservation, we considered 1) total and endemic species richness, 2) phylogenetic...

Conservation Units (CU) aim to contribute to the balance between human and environmental demand, by protecting natural resources and biological communities. In this study we examined the differences in the attributes of the fish community in four stretches of an urban stream, two inside and two outside the CU, without vegetation cover, and tested the hypothesis that the presence of riparian vegetation is positively reflected in the attributes of fish fauna. Five species were caught, distributed into four orders and five families. Attributes like richness, abundance, dominance, Shannon-Wiener diversity, and evenness were estimated and significant differences were detected for continuous stretches considering stream flow direction. The first stretches (URBI...

Extinction of mammalian populations in conservation units of the Brazilian Cerrado by inbreeding depression in stochastic environments Genet. Mol. Biol.
Silva,Marcel Müller Fernandes Pereira da; Diniz-Filho,José Alexandre Felizola.
Despite methodological and theoretical advances in conservation genetics, data on genetic variation on broad regional spatial scales are still scarce, leading conservation planners to use general heuristic or simulation models for an integrated analysis of genetic, demographic and landscape parameters. Here, we extended previous results by evaluating spatial patterns of extinction by inbreeding depression under stochastic variation of environments for mammalian populations in 31 conservation units of the Brazilian Cerrado. We observed a large spatial variation of times to extinction, for different conservation units and body-size classes of species. For small-bodied species (500 g), the population times to extinction in the conservation units were usually...

Phylogenetic autocorrelation and evolutionary diversity of Carnivora (Mammalia) in Conservation Units of the New World Genet. Mol. Biol.
Tôrres,Natália Mundim; Diniz-Filho,José Alexandre Felizola.
One of the main concerns of Conservation Biology is the identification of priority areas for conservation, and the development of quantitative methods is important to achieve this task. Many phylogenetic diversity indexes and higher-taxon approaches have been used in this context. In this study, Faith's phylogenetic indexes and the number of evolutionary independent lineages of Carnivora were calculated at the average patch level based on phylogenetic autocorrelation analysis of phenotypic traits, in 18 conservation units in America (frequently National Parks). Despite controversies about the hierarchical level to be adopted, the characters included in this study suggest that the family level produces independent units for the analysis of phenotypic...

Predation on the black capuchin monkey Cebus nigritus (Primates: Cebidae) by domestic dogs Canis lupus familiaris (Carnivora: Canidae), in the Parque Estadual Serra do Brigadeiro, Minas Gerais, Brazil Zoologia
Oliveira,Valeska B. de; Linares,Antônio M.; Corrêa,Guilherme L. C.; Chiarello,Adriano G..
Predation on an adult male black capuchin monkey, Cebus nigritus (Goldfuss, 1809) by two domestic dogs was observed in the Parque Estadual Serra do Brigadeiro, in the Atlantic Forest of southeastern Minas Gerais. Predation occurred in an area of well preserved native forest 800 m from the nearest forest edge. This is the first confirmed record of predation by domestic dogs in this reserve, yet data from a study in the same area indicates that the domestic dog is the most frequently recorded mammal species, which suggests that it is common in the area. The few published reports indicate that this problem occurs in other conservation units in Brazil and should, therefore, be treated with more rigor by the environmental agencies.

Spatial configuration of the occurrence of bat species (Mammalia: Chiroptera) in eastern Mato Grosso, Brazil Biota Neotropica
Oliveira,Sérgio Lopes de; Souza,Loana Araújo Silva; Silva,Hellen Kezia; Faria,Karina de Cassia.
Given the substantial lacunas in the understanding of the occurrence and distribution of bat species in the eastern portion of the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso (Araguaia basin), this study presents an inventory of the species known to occur in the region, highlighting the areas sampled adequately and the species known to occur in conservation units. Georeferenced records of the occurrence of bat species in the region were obtained from published studies, scientific collections, through either the SpeciesLink network or directly from the curator, as well as the capture of specimens by our research group between 2008 and 2013. A 0.5° x 0.5° (latitude/longitude) grid was added to the map of the region for the quantification of the bat species richness of...

The harvestmen fauna (Arachnida: Opiliones) of the Parque Estadual Carlos Botelho, and the Floresta Nacional de Ipanema, São Paulo, Brazil Biota Neotropica
Resende,Leonardo Palloni Accetti; Pinto-da-Rocha,Ricardo; Bragagnolo,Cibele.
The harvestmen fauna of the Floresta Nacional de Ipanema (FLONA Ipanema) and Parque Estadual Carlos Botelho (PE Carlos Botelho) were inventoried using nocturnal manual collection and sifting of litter. Fourteen species were recorded from the FLONA Ipanema, a richness and diversity higher than those previously reported for other localities in Atlantic Semi-deciduous Forest. The PE Carlos Botelho, with 38 recorded species, is the third richest site for harvestmen in the state of São Paulo. The estimates of species richness place the FLONA Ipanema with a richness of locations near the Coastal Atlantic Rain Forest. A similarity analysis showed that the areas possess only a few species in common, indicated by the very low of similarities indexes, showing the...

The ichthyofauna of upper rio Capivari: defining conservation strategies based on the composition and distribution of fish species Neotropical Ichthyology
Pompeu,Paulo dos Santos; Reis,Liana Sisi dos; Gandini,Cíntia Veloso; Souza,Rafael Couto Rosa de; Favero,Jana Menegassi del.
Although the rio Capivari basin is recognized as an area of great importance for the ichthyofauna, it lacks virtually every basic requirement for the definition of appropriate conservation strategies, since not even its species composition is known. The objective of this work is to determine the composition and distribution of fish species in the upper rio Capivari basin, relating them to the local physical features, and to evaluate the effectiveness of proposed conservations units, delimited based on areas of native vegetation remains, on the conservation of local ichthyofauna. During 2007, 50 different watercourses were sampled with gillnets, cast nets and kick nets. A total of 1308 individuals belonging to 41 species were captured. Degree of...

Ticks (Acari: Ixodidae) on domestic dogs in Serra de Caldas Novas State Park, Goiás: epidemiological aspects Biota Neotropica
Queirogas,Vera Lúcia de; Oliveira,Liliane Martins de; Marques,Renata Leal; Oliveira,Diego Silva Freitas; Szabó,Matias Pablo Juan.
We herein report tick (Acari: Ixodidae) infestation of four domestic dogs wandering inside Serra de Caldas Novas State Park, Goiás. Twenty seven ticks were collected from these hosts along nine days in November 2008. Ticks were identified as adults of Amblyomma cajennense, Amblyomma ovale, Amblyomma tigrinum and Rhipicephalus sanguineus as well as Amblyomma spp. nymphs. One of the dogs displayed facial myoclonus, a symptom of canine distemper. Such disease is a serious viral and contagious disease of dogs and also of several wild animals. Overall tick species found on dogs clearly showed the transit of these hosts between the natural areas of the park and anthropic areas, urban or rural. Such situation illustrates the potential of dogs to transmit...
